Funny story:
I had been scheduled for a long time to preach in our "Live316" worship service today. They set the schedule a couple months ago, along with setting the scripture passages each service would focus on. I had arranged to have all of January "off," due to lots of weekend youth stuff (including SHYC.)
Then when all my family stuff happened, I took most of February off, too.
Today's text was a bit ironic. Another member of the "planning team" for the service freaked when she saw it, and realized I was scheduled to teach. I talked to the pastor that's leading the service, and told her that if the congregation could deal with the passage and the stuff going on in my life right now, then I could.
One of the nice things about leading small worship services is that you can know what's going on in the lives of many of the members of the congregation. Based on that knowledge, she thought it would be good for me to go ahead with the scheduled text.
I think this is the first time I've ever heard the Lazarus story taught without going through the whole story - the "lectionary" schedule (which wasn't actually the lectionary, but was our self-imposed schedule) had us stopping after the first half of the story.
Anyhow....comments welcome.
